Dear Ambassador Caroline Kennedy,
I am sending you a copy of my letter addressed to Pope Francis.
In this letter I expressed my hope for the continued cooperation
between President Obama and Pope Francis to realize a “World without
Nuclear Weapons”, pointing out that a UN Ethics Summit marks the
beginning of it. I also informed him of increasing international
support for it.
Fukushima is no longer merely a Japanese problem. It is also a global
problem. The Tokyo Olympic Games clearly prove that Japan is not
consecrating maximum efforts to bring the Fukushima accident under
control.
My request addressed to President Thomas Bach to reassess the safety of
Tokyo is overshadowed by the new urgent need to verify the safety of
the whole Japan, threatened as it is by the worsening situation
emanating from the molten fuel rods, suspected to be widely
disseminating neutron and tritium radiation.
The global environment continues to suffer seriously from unstoppable
radioactive contamination. The international cooperation to cope with
this, the necessity of which is admitted by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe,
has not yet been concretized as yet. The lack of the sense of crisis
prevails worldwide, helped by the Tokyo Olympic Games. All of this
amply justifies the expanding plea among conscientious Japanese
citizens for an honorable retreat from the Olympics for the sake of
adequately coping with Fukushima.
I surmise that this is the solution that satisfies the IOC in that it
is unable to confirm the safety of Tokyo and, because of this, is
increasingly becoming the target of criticism.
Please allow me to count on your understanding and support. I dare to
hope that the attached letter will be transmitted to President Obama.
With highest and warmest regards,
Mitsuhei Murata
