Dear Friends,
Symptoms of change in Japan are surfacing.
The new Governor of Tokyo,Yuriko Koike,is vigorously tackling with indispensable reforms.
The budget of the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020 ranks the first. Its
extravagance is being criticized by the public and its background is
being researched.
The NHK, sole public broadcaster, surprised the public when its 7
commentators severely criticized the nuclear policy of Japan in its
program of 26 August.Among their assertions, I was particularly
impressed by the following 2 points.
1.We should so revise the currrent system that leaves unclear where
lies the responsibility in case of nuclear accidents. The state should
assume full responsibility.
2.The fast breeder reactor Monju and the Rokkasho-village reprocessing plant shoud be closed.
These assertions have allowed me to send out a message reminding that
the worst case of the Rokkasho-village reprocessing plant could bring
about the disastrous conseuences, equivalent to those of 1000 nuclear
reactors. We should not forget the "Power Failure of Cherbourg of 1980
at La Hague reprocessing plant"that could have caused a global disaster
beyond imagination.
In addition to the foregoing, the Former Japanese Prime Minister
Junichiro Koizumi is powerfully reminding the world of the tragic
consequences radiation emanating from Fukushima is causing worldwide. He
held a press conference at the Foreign Correspondents' Club on 7
September 2016.
Former Prime Minister Koizumi’s confirmation that “under control is a
lie” will bring about its logical consequence, that is to say,the
cancellation of the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020.
The IOC could no longer ignore the increasing demands of the civil
society to reassure the safety of the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020.
Please allow me to count on your understanding and support.
With warmest rgards,
Mitsuhei Murata
(Former Japanese Ambassador to Switzerland)
